FDM or resin: choosing a first 3D printing technology
The better technology depends on the job. FDM melts filament and deposits layers; MSLA cures liquid resin with light. A high pixel count does not give a resin printer a large bed, and a large FDM machine does not eliminate layer lines.
For functional or larger parts
Start with FDM. Compare usable volume, compatible material and physical footprint. Splitting a large part can also save machine space and material.
For fine small details
Resin may be better, but adds a vat, consumables, washing, curing and a ventilated work area. Read the resin’s manual and safety data sheet before starting.
Full cost
Include material, removal tools, cleaning, protection, replacement parts and post-processing time. The printer is only the first line of that budget.
