How to measure a part for 3D printer build volume

Build volume is published as X × Y × Z: nominal width, depth and height of the printable area. It is neither the machine’s outside dimensions nor a promise that every part fits in every orientation.

Test the model in a slicer

Import the file, confirm its units and rotate the part to the position you will actually print. Record the X, Y and Z dimensions shown by the slicer. If it needs supports or a brim, measure the complete arrangement again.

Allow a margin

Do not plan on using the last millimeter without checking machine profiles, bed clips, edge behavior and adhesion. For a batch of smaller parts, allow space between objects.

Turn the number into a choice

Explore small, medium and large FDM printers and compare each profile. If small detailed miniatures matter most, examine resin printers, which use a different workflow.
