3D print first layer: a step-by-step diagnosis

Moving the nozzle closer is not the cure for every first-layer failure. A rounded line with gaps may mean it is too high; no extrusion or scraping can mean it is too low. The exact procedure depends on the printer and its sensor.

Check in this order

  1. Use a surface compatible with the material and clean it as its manual describes.
  2. Confirm the slicer profile matches the printer, nozzle, sheet and filament.
  3. Print a single-layer test and inspect the full line, including edges.
  4. Use only the adjustment procedure your model supports; some calibrate automatically and others require manual Z tuning.

After a correction

Save the profile, repeat the test, then start a long print. To check whether the part fits with supports, use the build-volume guide.
